Salmon, shrimp and scallops are not usually things you’d think about buying online. Many people have yet to make any purchase from the web so if you were to suggest that they buy their fresh seafood from the Internet they may think you’re crazy. The biggest concern most people have when it comes to ordering food from a website, is how fresh can it really be?

You may be surprised to know that much of the perishable food that is sold online is actually fresher than what you’d find in your local supermarket. This is true when it comes to fresh seafood as well. When you purchase a piece of trout or some whitefish at your supermarket, it had to come on a truck that may have taken days to arrive. When you purchase the same fish from an online vendor, it’s more than likely freshly caught, packed up and sent via courier overnight to your home.

As with any purchase you need to do a bit of research before making a final sale. Some online retailers aren’t as trustworthy as others, and even though they offer a discounted price for their fresh seafood, it may come at the cost of quality and taste.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to check out a website and their track record is to do a search for reviews. Also see how long they’ve been in business and if they offer a toll-free number for customer questions and orders. If they are hiding behind an email address as the only method of communication, that should be an immediate red flag.

When you do feel comfortable that the vendor you are ordering from is established and ships quality goods, it will be time to place your order. Fresh seafood is always best when it’s consumed within a day or two of being brought up from the water. Therefore it’s important that you order when you know you will be using it within that time frame.

If you’re having a dinner party next week where you intend on serving lobster to your guests, don’t order it now. Fresh lobster is still alive and you’ll need to have it delivered the day of the party. Many online websites sell lobster this way and will ship it to you at the time you request.

Many foods lose much of their taste and nutritional value if they are purchased and then not eaten for several days. You really can’t compromise when it comes to fresh seafood. Order it when you need it, and enjoy it as soon as possible. You’ll be glad you did.

Fixing meal that is quick buy taste homemade is the key to successfully cooking a well balanced dinner on a hectic weeknight. When you get home from a rough day you will want to fix a dinner that will be healthy for you and your family but will also give you a break in the kitchen. How can you do that?

Sandwiches taste great when they are hot. Plan to have a hot sandwich for dinner with a healthy tossed salad. Choose only select meats that are fresh from the deli. You don’t want this to be an ordinary bologna sandwich, not that there is anything wrong with ordinary bologna sandwiches. When you plan to make a hot sandwich make it with meat that you usually don’t make it with. There are different types of salami, ham and more. Use cheeses that you don’t normally use as well. Experimenting with the deli meats and cheeses usually has a positive affect. On a hot grill, place your sandwiches down and allow to heat thoroughly on both sides and melt the cheese slowly over the different layers of meats. When you pull the sandwiches off the heat, allow them to cool and then top with your favorite toppings; lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, mustard, pickle and more.

You can have a great hamburger steak and gravy with some baked French fries. Before you start the meat, prepare your potatoes by cutting them in uniform to look like French Fries. Bake them in an oven set at 400 degrees for about 45 minutes. Covering them with aluminum foil at the beginning will help them to become tender and then uncover for browning. Meanwhile, make hamburger meat in the shape of a patty and add it to a warm pan to simmer. While your hamburger patty is simmering you can open up a packet of gravy mix to have ready when your hamburger patties are done. You may want to chop an onion to add to the hamburger when you are forming a patty. Put the gravy on the stove to warm. You can add mushrooms or anything else you would like to the gravy. When the hamburger patties are done you can pour the gravy over the patties and add some fries to your plate for a delicious meal.

Soups can be a great way to make a meal go a long way. During the week you can save all of your left over vegetables in a baggie so you can add them to soups on the weekend. Then when you get ready to prepare your soup, you can make enough to last for two or three days. Fix some bread to go along with your soup and you will have a great meal that everyone can help themselves too. Soup is good at anytime of the year, especially if it is simmered in a slow cooker throughout the day.

One of the simplest meals to make is pork barbecue. What makes it simple is the fact that you add it to your slow cooker at night before you go to bed. In the morning you can pull the pork apart and then add barbecue sauce over it and set it in the refrigerator. When you get home from work, you just heat the barbeque and make coleslaw that will compliment the dinner and everyone will love this meal.

Another simple idea is to use the crock pot. With a couple of minutes preparation in the morning, then by evening you will have the most delicious meal cooked for your family. The flavors are intense, the aroma amazing and only one dish to wash. The one thing to remember is that you need to make dinners easy on yourself as well as make them healthy and something that everyone will want to eat.

This month is filled with family birthday parties,so I decided it’s about time to figure out how to make cakes from scratch. There was a time were you simply couldn’t head to the store to buy a cake and everyone made their own. Now it’s my turn to give homemade cakes and frostings a try.

I started by looking for a few different birthday cake recipes and have been trying them out on my family. I’ve discovered a couple of great basic recipes which combined with different frostings should cover most cake occasions.

For my daughter’s cake this year we are going with a chocolate cake and a easy vanilla frosting. I think vanilla frosting is just one of those simple toppings anyone should be able to make. It only takes a few minutes to put together and making a cake from scratch doesn’t take any more time than using a box mix.

Not only does it come in handy to frost cakes, but also as a topping for muffins, spice cakes or as a dip for fruit. I’ve even been known to spread some on sugar cookies and then letting the kids decorate these sweet treats with various sprinkles. Great fun for a rainy afternoon.

One of my favorite cakes is a simple two layer yellow cake, frosted with a simple vanilla frosting and then topped with various fresh berries. It’s delicious and looks absolutely stunning. Of course it would also be great with some cream cheese frosting or even a chocolate frosting and then topped with strawberries.

If you’ve never made cake from scratch, or whipped up your own frosting for that matter, give it a try. It’s much easier than you think and the end result tastes so much better than anything you could get from the store. I know my family has appreciated that I’ve taken the plunge into making cakes from scratch.
