Some women are lucky to be tuned into their body and know every little change that happens. Your period, that’s waiting a bit to long to start. That sudden fatigue or moodiness might clue them in. But, most women don't suspect they are pregnant until they miss a period, and a few don't suspect or believe they are pregnant for months after conception.
Here are 5 common first symptoms of early pregnancy. You may experience all, some or none of these symptoms.
First Symptoms of Your Pregnancy
A Missed Period
Frequent Trips to the Bathroom
Fatigue
Morning (and Noon and Night!) Sickness
Sore (and Enlarged) Breasts
Abdominal Bloating
If you have any of the above symptoms, consider taking a pregnancy test as soon as possible. If the test results are positive, then it’s time to visit the doctor.
What to Expect at the Prenatal Visit
You’ve seen all the symptoms and you’ve taken that test, Congratulations, you’re pregnant! At your first prenatal care appointment, your physician will examine you to confirm your pregnancy. They will then review your health status, record your complete medical history, and give you some routine tests. The tests you receive will depend on your personal and family medical history; you may not receive all of these tests.
Some of the common tests may be:
a pregnancy test
blood screens to determine immunity to diseases such as rubella
urinalysis to screen for sugar, protein, white blood cells, blood, and bacteria
genetic tests for sickle-cell anemia or Tay-Sachs disease
a blood test to determine your blood type and to check for anemia
tests to disclose the presence of sexually transmitted infections and some other diseases
a Pap smear for the detection of cervical cancer; and/or
a gestational diabetic screening test.
Ask your Doctor questions; keep a journal of them for the next visit. It’s also wise to stop smoking if you are, abstain from alcohol and start taking prenatal vitamins. The first few months are vital to your growing child’s development.
