Pregnancy Symptoms

Most of the joys and discomforts of pregnancy come from the wide variety of pregnancy symptoms you’ll be experiencing in the next nine months. The symptoms of pregnancy range from suddenly clear skin to painful heartburn and everything in between.

In the first trimester, your body is getting used to being host to a new life. Most of the symptoms during this time have to do with your fluctuating hormones. The “morning sickness” that is associated with pregnancy happens during this time. You may feel queasy or nauseous. Some women vomit, but others just feel sick to their stomachs all of the time. Eating small meals throughout the day and staying hydrated will help the nausea.

Tiredness and headaches are another result of your changing hormones. Try to rest as much as you can. Most doctors discourage using over the counter pain relievers, if it can be avoided. You can deal with headaches by drinking more water and using a warm wet cloth over your forehead and eyes.

Toward the end of the first trimester, and the beginning of the second, your swelling uterus will begin to put pressure on your bladder. Visiting the restroom frequently will be a trend throughout the rest of your pregnancy as your bladder gets pushed out of the way.

The second trimester is often the most enjoyable for pregnant women. Your body is used to the new hormonal balance, and your belly is not big enough to make you uncomfortable. Any nausea experienced in the first trimester generally goes away by 12 weeks. Some women experience clear and smooth skin on their faces. Breasts generally get bigger and firmer, and the libido is increased earning the second trimester the moniker “the honeymoon trimester.”

On the downside, heartburn and constipation increase during this trimester. Avoid spicy, fried and fatty foods to reduce heartburn. Constipation can be alleviated by a fiber-rich diet including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Third trimester symptoms reflect your body’s response to your increased weight and size of your uterus. Backaches are common, and you may have trouble sleeping comfortably. Try sleeping on your side and supporting your body with pillows to get a good night’s rest. Avoid lifting heavy items, and do back strengthening exercises that are appropriate for the third trimester.

Varicose veins on the legs are also a problem during this trimester. Swelling in your hands, face and feet should be watched carefully. Relieve swelling by elevating your feet and hands above your heart.

Although pregnancy symptoms can sometimes be annoying, they will disappear after the baby is born. If you’re suffering too much, talk to your doctor to see if there are any medical solutions. Getting through pregnancy symptoms is easier when you remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and a beautiful, healthy baby as well.
