Having a baby is a life changing experience, but getting pregnant can be an ordeal for some women. Although medical science has definitely decreased infertility there are several natural things you can do to get pregnant before trying those methods.
Once you've decided you want to become pregnant, it's time to get to know your body intimately. If you don't already, start tracking your menstrual cycle. This will allow you to determine when you ovulate and help you pick the best times for conceiving. Tracking your cycle will also help you find out if you have irregular periods or other problems.
You'll obviously want to stop using birth control. If you've been on the pill, you may need to wait a few cycles to get your period back on track. The hormones in the pill disrupt your normal menstrual cycle. Some women are fertile the month after they stop birth control, but for others it may take a while.
You can track your ovulation through several methods. Calculating it on a calendar works just fine for some women. Taking your temperature when you get up each morning can clue you into your ovulation. You should try to conceive right after your temperature drops and before it rises again.
Some women prefer to know for sure whether or not they are ovulating and use ovulating predictor tests. Ovulation testing kits are available at the drug store. They measure the amount of lutenizing hormone in your body. LH levels increase right before you ovulate. The tests are taken just like an at home pregnancy test.
You can also look for signs of ovulation. Many women feel cramping on one side or the other of their abdomen when they are ovulating. However, ovulation pain doesn't happen to everyone.
When you have sex during your fertile period there are a few things you can do to encourage conception. After sex, remain in a prone position for at least 20 minutes. Standing up and moving around can cause the semen to leak out. It can help to elevate your pelvis with a pillow to help the sperm travel toward your uterus.
There's no evidence that certain positions during sex can help conception. However, missionary position allows the deepest penetration and will, theoretically, deposit sperm closer to the cervix. Woman on top and standing positions will make it harder for semen to reach the uterus.
Limit sex in the days prior to your fertile period to help increase your man's sperm count. Increased sperm count means there are greater chances of you getting pregnant. Also, alcohol and drugs can severely affect conception.
Above all, keep a positive attitude! Mindset and emotional states during sex and surrounding conception make a big difference. Keep in mind that very few people conceive on their first try. You shouldn't become concerned unless you've been unable to conceive for 12 months if you're under 30, and 6 months if you're over 35.
