Getting Pregnant Myths

Did your girlfriends or boyfriends ever tell you, "Oh don't worry you can't get pregnant if..." There are so many myths, old wives tales and just plain miscommunications about getting and not getting pregnant out there today that it’s hard to tell what is fact and what is fiction.

The Myths, I won’t get pregnant If...

  • It's my very first time having sex. Sex is sex whether it's your first time or your 100th . Those little sperm know the way to the egg and will fertilize it whether you're ready for it or not.
  •  He didn't have an orgasm inside me I won’t get pregnant. Men will still leak a little semen during sexual intercourse as lubrication. Even if he does pull out, sperm might find a way down through your vagina and once there, the sperm know the way. It's wise to use a condom for prevention.
  •  Douching with vinegar, soda pop, or hot water will prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. There is nothing in soda pop that will prevent or kill the sperm from reaching that egg. It might harm you more then it will the sperm. Douching might reduce the risk, but the odds are still high of getting pregnant.
  •  I'm on my period. I can't possibly get pregnant.   When you’re young your cycles are still varied and you might be ovulating at different times. Also, sperm live in the uterus for 2 to 5 days waiting for that egg to be released.
  • Changing sexual positions with the girl on top will prevent pregnancy.   Sperm will swim up, down and sideways. The woman or man's position won't affect whether she gets pregnant or not.
  •  I can jump up and down or sneeze after sex and I'm ok. There are 300 million sperm jockeying for that #1 position in that egg. They can swim very fast; it only takes seconds for those little guys to get up in that uterus. Even if you jump or sneeze, you can’t get all the sperm out of your uterus.

Don't Rely on the Myths

A much as most of us would like some of these myths to work, they don't. The only way to not get pregnant is to abstain. The next sure way would be to use a proven type of birth control such as the pill, IUD, Condom and spermacides.

If you do think you might be pregnant be sure to go see a doctor, they will be able to tell you if you’re pregnant and what courses you should take.
