You’ve missed your period and taken an at-home pregnancy test; you are now pregnant! What a wonderful, exciting and perhaps confusing time for you. If this is your first pregnancy or even if it isn’t you may be asking many questions. What will happen to my body? What signs and symptoms will I start to experience during my pregnancy? You will hear many things from different women, below are some of the standard signs and symptoms that may happen to you.
Your First Month of Pregnancy Symptoms
Symptoms during your first month of pregnancy can vary from woman to woman as well as pregnancy to pregnancy. You may experience all of them, just a few, or none of them.
Your period stops or becomes very light.
You may bleed or spot
You feel tired.
Your breasts swell and may be tender.
Your nipples and the area around the nipples (areola) get darker and broader.
You may feel nausea or queasiness. Some women even vomit. ("Morning sickness" can happen any time of day -- it may help to eat small meals throughout the day, eat crackers or toast before you get out of bed, or drink juice or lemonade.)
Sensitivity to odors and foods
You have to urinate more often.
You may become constipated and have heartburn (Tums may help).
You may have headaches.
It is also common to have a variety of feelings about being pregnant, including misgivings, fear, joy, and elation. Emotionally, you may feel irritable, may act irrationally, have mood swings, and be quick to cry. This is very similar to what is experienced by women who have premenstrual syndrome (PMS), only to a greater degree.
Your Partner Is Going Through Changes Also
Remember it takes two to make a child. Your partner will also be running the emotional gamut about your pregnancy. It is important to talk with each other about how you are feeling. Both of you will need the support of one another. If you don’t have the support of a partner then rely on friends and family.
