As soon as you find out you're expecting, you'll probably be thinking about maternity clothes. Luckily, the days of hiding your growing bump are long gone. Today's maternity clothes are flattering and allow you to showcase your pregnancy with pride.
The biggest problem with maternity clothes is that they can get downright expensive. To top it off, you won't be wearing the clothes for very long. Your mid-pregnancy clothes won't fit at the end of your pregnancy, and your late-pregnancy clothes will be too big before you're 7 months along.
Many moms-to-be have figured out clever ways to save money on maternity clothes. You never have to pay full price for maternity clothes, unless you find something you absolutely have to have.
Although it can be exciting to buy maternity clothes when you first get pregnant, resist the impulse. Unless you're in the habit of wearing skintight clothes, you probably won't need new outfits until the second trimester. Buying clothes when you need them, instead of before you need them, will help you save money. After all, when you're only 7 weeks you have no idea how big you'll be by 7 months.
If you simply must buy something new, try getting larger regular clothes instead of maternity clothes to begin with. You have to keep in mind that after the pregnancy you're not going to fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes right away. These larger clothes will be very handy in your post-partum days.
When you do start to buy maternity clothes, look for bargains. Many cities have second hand baby stores that carry maternity clothes. You can also look at Goodwill. Lots of women donate their maternity clothes after they are done with them, and you can find near mint clothes at second hand shops.
Another good source is eBay. Here you can buy large lots of clothes for low prices. You can get high-end clothes for Kmart prices. When you bid on maternity clothes online make sure to check the details of the auction carefully. Find out how much the seller is charging for shipping, and if the clothes come from a smoke free/pet free home. Getting smoke and pet smells out of clothes can be hard, plus your extra-sensitive pregnant nose might always tell the difference.
With a little ingenuity and smart shopping, you don't have to spend a bundle on maternity clothes.
